Bench-to-bedside

On June 11, 2024, Erasmus MC University in Rotterdam hosted a pivotal “Bench to Bedside” meeting as part of the Horizon Europe (HORIZON) Twinning project, SAME-NeuroID. This event was organized by Prof. Femke De Vrij, a principal investigator and key project partner from Erasmus MC. The meeting aimed to facilitate knowledge exchange between researchers at Łukasiewicz-PORT research center and Erasmus MC, focusing on translating fundamental research into clinical applications.

The meeting brought together a diverse group of participants, including five principal investigators, two students, and a technology transfer specialist from Łukasiewicz-PORT. The gathering was designed to leverage Erasmus MC’s extensive experience in bridging the gap between laboratory research and patient care, thus enhancing the capabilities of the Łukasiewicz-PORT team.

MEETING

During the event, several case studies were presented to illustrate successful transitions from research to clinical practice. Notably, Blink Lab was highlighted as an exemplary case. This start-up has developed a mobile phone application that enables remote neurobehavioral evaluations, aiding research on conditions like schizophrenia, autism, ADHD, and various forms of dementia. The technology’s ability to conduct large-scale, at-home testing through smartphone-based eyeblink conditioning and prepulse inhibition tests demonstrated innovative methods for early detection and monitoring of neurological disorders.

Participants also explored the Tailored Program, a collaboration aimed at developing personalized genetic therapies for neurodevelopmental disorders. This initiative, led by Prof. De Vrij, emphasized the use of human neuronal iPSCs for therapeutic discovery and highlighted the challenges and strategies in pushing such niche therapies towards commercialization.

Another significant discussion centered around the ENCORE program, which integrates multidisciplinary expertise to deliver specialized care and develop new treatments for rare genetic neurocognitive diseases. The program’s emphasis on combining basic and clinical research to improve patient outcomes provided valuable insights into the importance of a collaborative, patient-centered approach in medical research.

MEETING

The “Bench to Bedside” meeting was instrumental in reinforcing the commercialization strategies and research methodologies of the SAME-NeuroID project. The lessons learned underscored the necessity of interdisciplinary collaboration and the focus on patient-centered innovation. This event not only strengthened the ties between the participating institutions but also paved the way for future advancements in neuropsychiatric research and its application in clinical settings.
