15th International Conference on Brain Energy Metabolism

Conference

Paweł Hanus at ICBEM

Paweł Hanus attended the 15th International Conference on Brain Energy Metabolism (ICBEM), held from September 17-21, 2024, themed „Brain Bioenergetics in Aging – Neurovascular and Neurometabolic Coupling and Fuels”, was a landmark gathering of experts, young researchers, and clinicians dedicated to exploring  developments in brain energy metabolism. The conference provided an excellent platform for interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration.

The event commenced with a warm welcome from the organizing committee, setting the stage for five days of intellectually stimulating discussions. Renowned keynote speakers delivered insights into the complex interplay of neurometabolic and neurovascular coupling in both aging and diseased brains, particularly in the context of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Sessions also focused on the latest advancements in imaging technologies that reveal how brain bioenergetics drive cognition and resilience against neurodegeneration.

CONFERENCE

One of the highlights was the discussion on alternative fuel utilization in the brain, with an emphasis on how disruptions in fuel transport and metabolism contribute to cognitive decline. Panels on astrocyte and microglial support mechanisms shed light on cellular resilience and their pivotal role in the aging brain.

I had the privilege of presenting my poster titled „GR-FKBP51 Pathway Regulates Metabolic Status of Astrocytes” – said Paweł. „This research explored how the GR-FKBP51 signaling pathway modulates astrocytic metabolism, influencing the brain’s bioenergetic balance. The presentation elicited valuable feedback from fellow researchers and clinicians, who expressed particular interest in how these findings might translate to therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative diseases.

The networking sessions provided ample opportunities to connect with leading scientists, exchange ideas, and foster potential collaborations.

In conclusion, the 15th ICBEM successfully underscored the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and addressing challenges in brain energy metabolism. The conference reaffirmed the critical role of bioenergetics in advancing therapeutic strategies for aging and neurodegenerative conditions.
