On July 10, 2025, Dr. Monika Matusiak from the Mazovian Center of Hearing and Speech MEDINCUS in Warsaw and Kajetany gave a SAME-NeuroID scientific seminar.
Topic: Biomarkers of neuroplasticity in congenital deafness treatment with cochlear implantation – is MMP-9 a one?
The seminar included an open lecture at 2:00 p.m. and a Q&A session for Young Researchers at 3:00 p.m. in Building A, Aula (1st floor), and was also streamed online via the SAME-Match-Treat platform.
During the seminar, Dr. Matusiak discussed whether cochlear implant success in deaf children can be predicted. The research focused on biomarkers of brain plasticity – specifically the MMP-9 protein level and a variant of the MMP9 gene – in children with profound hearing loss. Results showed that lower MMP-9 levels and the C/C genotype were associated with better speech development 18 months after implantation, especially in children implanted after their first birthday.
These findings advance personalized treatment approaches and more effective hearing and speech rehabilitation.
