CONFERENCE

13th Neuronus conference in Cracow

In April 2024, Bartosz Zglinicki, together with his lab members, attended the 13th Neuronus conference in Cracow, Poland. The event was large and covered many aspects of neuroscience, although Bartosz focused mainly on automated quantification of animal behavior. This time he presented a poster entitled “Establishing the unified, automatic, unbiased platform for characterization of social behavior in mice.”

Since there was a sizeable group of scientists—both early-career and senior—highly interested in this topic, the discussions became very dynamic. They talked in detail about how machine learning and simple rule-based classifiers can support accurate identification of specific mouse behaviors. They covered both strengths and limitations of these approaches, as well as the challenges in improving classifier efficiency.

Young researchers, especially those from psychology, asked many questions about how results from animal studies can translate to human research and what the future directions of automation— including artificial intelligence—might be in neuroscience overall.
